PHIXER for sports broadcast stereo effects and commentary that must fold to mono TV/radio

Stadium trucks, OB vans, and sports nets often deliver stereo effects beds, crowd, and music under commentary that still folds to mono TV speakers, radio simulcast, or plant mono. What feels huge in cans can thin on air. Check fold-down and phase before the package leaves the truck. Free phase-repair helps after polarity and timing. It is not a broadcast limiter, not a dialog cleaner, and not a substitute for a true mono listen on a small speaker.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a dialog denoiser, not a time-aligner, not a stereo widener, and not a substitute for polarity, delay matching, or a real mono / TV-speaker / radio-fold check. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo effects or commentary-adjacent path you must keep stereo under fold to mono TV or radio.

Three sports broadcast failure modes

Fast sports mono TV/radio audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Sum L+R on the effects bus, program print, or monitor controller mono. Listen to commentary body, crowd, and beds under play.
  2. A/B stereo vs mono. Note what disappears on fold: crowd width, stingers, music beds, guest lav under sideline hits.
  3. Mute wide FX / Haas / side-heavy verbs briefly under a commentary pass. Note which path thins the TV or radio fold.
  4. Confirm on a small speaker or single earbud (TV / kitchen-radio proxy), then again after any loudness / limiter / encode pass, not only before cleanup.

Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)

1. True mono / L+R listen on the sports delivery path

Hard L+R sum on the stereo effects / program print or LoRo-style bounce. Habit: mono compatibility checklist and the 60-second audition above.

2. Polarity if a path flips

Crowd pair vs plant, announce booth vs sideline, stereo FX vs wireless. Flip polarity when body returns. Guide: polarity vs phase.

3. Timing / delay-align before spectral tools

Nudge dual mics and dual-path beds a few ms. Spectral rotation is not a substitute for timing.

4. Prefer correlated commentary and lows for the TV / radio path

Keep critical commentary and low-mid correlated. Put width in sides that survive fold. Related: radio / FM fold-down and TV dialog / mono TV speakers.

5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo effects path must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
